A group of middle-class families travel from Tehran to spend the weekend at the seaside. Elly, a teacher of one of the girls is also invited to be a part of this trip. During the trip, Elly wishes to return to Tehran siting her mother's heart surgery but is prevented from leaving as her luggage goes missing. During the course of the trip, Elly who was to watch the kids playing at sea goes missing and a series of blame game within the rest of the group follows. There is more to the disappearance of Elly that meets the eye initially.

About the Film

A family drama of how an acquaintance is invited to a trip and series of events that happen during the trip which affects the entire group is what "About Elly" depicts.


  1. According to director Asghar Farhadi, the film was not accepted into one Japanese film festival, since the movie's depiction of Iran was quite different from the idea that most foreign (especially Western) people tend to have of this country.

  3. This is Golshifteh Farahani's last movie in Iran, which she did after Body of Lies (2008) by Ridley Scott.

About the Director

Asghar Farhadi is an Iranian film director and screenwriter. He holds a BA degree in Dramatic arts and MA degree in Stage direction.

As a director, he is a recepient of Golden Globe Award and an Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, among many others. The film earning him the prestigious and his maiden Academy award was "A Separation" releasing in 2011.

Before moving to full fledged direction; he made short films and wrote screenplays for TV series.


About the Guest

Latha Menon is a renowned ad film and documentary maker. She holds a Bachelor's degree in Commerce from Ethiraj college, Chennai. and has completed the course in Mass communication from Sophia Polytechnic Mumbai. After returning to Chennai, she teamed up with Rajiv Menon to set up Iris films.

Hardwork, talent, clarity of thought, attention to detail have been the ruling mantra of Iris films, which has over 150 films to its credit spanning over 17 years.

An avid reader of philosophy and fiction in her spare time, she also loves Indian classical music, with Shobha Gurtu being one of her favourities.Thumris and Carnatic music from a part of her large collection, a passion she shares with her husband, Rajiv Menon, as well.
