The movie is about a salesman on a business trip who is stalked and chased recklessly to near-death by a tanker truck with a mysterious driver. The movie has its nail-biting peaks during the chase sequence intermittent with the relaxing yet uneasy pit-stops at the diner and gas stations. It culminates with a climax where the salesman outwits the truck driver with this courage and desperation.

About the Film

Duel is a thriller film based on a short story and is a second full-feature direction effort of Steven Spielberg.

  1. While filming the shot where the truck drives off the cliff, a piece of machinery designed to keep the truck traveling in a straight line without a driver failed. Instead of calling a halt, the driver, who had an important engagement the next day and didn't want to miss it, stayed in the driving seat and only jumped out at the very last second before the truck went over.
  2. It was shot in 13 days and is a personal benchmark of Steven spielberg.
  3. David Mann and Mrs. Mann are the only characters in the movie with names.

  1. Outstanding Achievement in Film Sound Editing at Primetime Emmy Awards 1972.
  2. Grand Prize at Avoriaz Fantastic Film Festival 1973.
  3. Best First Film at Taormina International Film Festival 1973.
